In this publication co-authored by Pascal Lorot, President of Institut Choiseul, and Pierre Verlyck, Adviser to the President of Institut Choiseul, we highlight the ambitions of Central Asia’s leading economy. Today, the country is a vital link in transport and logistics networks, notably through the “Middle Corridor”, which is driving rapidly expanding trade flows. It is also a dynamic economy, engaged in an accelerated cycle of reforms and modernisation that firmly positions Kazakhstan on the global map of influential nations.
An economic hub in full modernisation
Situated between Europe and Asia and endowed with abundant natural resources, Kazakhstan occupies a strategic geographical position in Central Asia, playing a leading role in both regional and international dynamics. Attracting 70% of FDI flows destined for Central Asia, the country is drawing increasing interest from investors thanks to its potential in a wide range of sectors, including energy, logistics, agriculture, and technology.
High-potential sectors at the heart of foreign investment
Since Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s rise to power, Kazakhstan has entered a period of real economic momentum and accelerated modernisation. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country undertook major economic reforms to integrate into the global economy. It continues along this path while further diversifying foreign investment. Over the years, strategic ties between France and Kazakhstan have also deepened, with numerous French companies operating in key sectors such as new energies, aerospace, and agri-food.
This Strategic Note aims to provide a tool for analysis and understanding of the regional and international challenges facing Kazakhstan. It also seeks to highlight the opportunities available to strengthen cooperation between Europe and Kazakhstan.
